Car Indicator Lights

When you’re on the road, one of the last things you want to see is an indicator light come up on your Volkswagen model’s dashboard. If you’re unfamiliar with these signals, you might become frantic and assume the worst. Our VW dealership in Peoria encourages you to remain calm, and pay attention to the color of the light to understand the severity of the problem.

In general, a red indicator light means there’s an issue that needs your immediate attention, and it might even be unsafe to continue driving. A yellow or amber light typically means you need to have something checked out soon, but it’s not urgent. Depending on the indicator, it could also be letting you know that a system is working as intended. For instance, the traction control system will flicker amber when it’s helping you tackle a slippery road. Green indicator lights reveal that a system or feature is on and working properly.

Common Indicator Lights

Here are some of the common indicator lights that might appear, and how you should address these symbols:

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring: There is a problem with the system that could be something as simple as low tire pressure.
  • Engine Malfunction: There may be an engine malfunction, and unfortunately, you’ll probably want to bring your vehicle in to have the engine checked over.
  • Alternator Low Voltage Output: The charging system has had a failure or the battery is low.
  • Oil Level Low: Either the oil level is low or the sensor is malfunctioning. First check the level, and if the problem ensues, bring your VW in for service.
  • Coolant Level/Temperature: When the coolant level is too low and the temperature is too high, stop your vehicle immediately and check the coolant level.
  • Bulb Failure: If the light is flashing, there is a problem with the headlamp leveling or the Adaptive Front-Lighting System. If the light is solid, one of the headlights it out.
  • Low Fuel Level: Refuel your vehicle as soon as possible.
  • Steering System: Stop your vehicle. A yellow or red flashing light reveals that the system is malfunctioning. A solid red light indicates that the power steering assist is failing, while a solid yellow means that the assist has been reduced.
