How Heat Impacts Your Tires

When you drive on underinflated tires, you’re increasing the likelihood of a blowout exponentially. When the tires overheat, especially when the temperatures are high, you may find yourself on the side of the road missing a tire. Although blowouts due to underinflated tires can happen any time of year, it’s the combination of hot temperatures and underinflation that are typically the culprit in summer months.

As you drive, the sidewalls of your tires are grabbing the asphalt, which creates heat. If your tire is inflated to the correctly, they won’t generate as much heat. When you add the summer sun to and underinflated tire that is working a lot harder to grip the road, the bonds in your tire can break down and leave you with a blowout.

If you want to avoid underinflated tires, be sure to follow these helpful tips:

  • Inflate your tires to the recommended psi. This can be found on the inside of the driver’s side door or in your owner’s manual.
  • Check your tires monthly. Tires will typically lose up to 1 psi per month, and the pressure will drop about 1 psi for every 10-degree drop in temperature.
  • Buy a good tire gauge. You may think about investing in a portable compressor that will work off your car’s power outlet.
